8:45 am Introductions
9:00 am Understanding Hearing Loss in School Age Children, Patti Craven and Kristy Mackie
- Hearing loss can vary from student to student and when you have a student who is hard of hearing or deaf in your classroom, you will likely have many questions. You may wonder what the student can and can’t hear, what caused the hearing loss, will it improve or get worse and what does the hearing loss mean for communication in school? We will discuss the answers to these question plus much more.
- This session will give you the tools that students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing need to build positive self-esteem, learn to advocate for themselves, and prepare for a lifetime course in meeting their own needs. Students also often require direct teaching of social cues and of how to develop and grow strong, lasting social connections.
Students who are deaf and hard of hearing have a disability that is invisible to the rest of the world. These students may appear to know and understand all that is happening around them because they smile or nod. This is usually not the case. As children grow into adolescence, there is a critical need to transfer ownership of the hearing loss from the adults to the adolescents in order to foster self-advocacy and empowerment.

Participants will learn about the different kinds of alerting systems specific to the DHH that are available on the market, and popular speech-to-text apps that are ideal in the classroom.
- In the second part of this session, Meaghan will explain what an ASL-English interpreter is, what their role may look like in the classroom and how to best work with an interpreter. You will leave with some helpful tips that you will be able to implement immediately into the classroom.
